The shift to blockbuster filmmaking in the 2000s paved the way for a multitude of big-budget films, especially in the science-fiction genre. Between 2000 and 2009, studios were still figuring out exactly what audiences wanted from sci-fi movies. Disaster stories, dystopian futures, aliens, time travel and alternate dimensions exploded onto the big screen, with the expansion resulting in a number of projects that never quite got their due.
